The Gulf Oil Spill Disintegrated This Island | National Geographic
Cat Island was once one of the four largest bird-nesting grounds in Louisiana. But the Deepwater Horizon oil spill killed the mangroves growing there, destroying the root system that held the island's sediment in place. Since 2010, the 5.5 acre island has been washing away into the Gulf of Mexico, and migratory birds find their home disappearing before their eyes.

Exxon Valdez Disaster: March 24, 1989 #history #todayinhistory #oil
March 24, 1989. The world is about to witness one of its most notorious man-made disasters. The Exxon Valdez, a colossal oil tanker, veers off course and crashes into a reef in the pristine waters of Alaska's Prince William Sound. The result? A catastrophic oil spill, spewing eleven million gallons of crude oil into the environment. It's a dark day for mankind and a stark reminder of the price we pay for progress. In the wake of the disaster, a wave of environmental consciousness sweeps across the globe. Laws are rewritten. Standards are raised. The world, it seems, has learned a painful lesson.
